After a bit of browsing around here and other sites I am under the assumption all I need to get started in my web design journey is Coda 2 and Photoshop. Am I cutting myself short or is that just fine? Thanks :)

Sublime text 2 or coda 2.0 would work great.
Photoshop is awesome. I love illustrator too.
Gimp is a free alternative to photoshop and cool. http://www.gimp.org
For "learning purposes" check out "CSS Hat" a plug in for photoshop. Haven't used it but looks useful for those learning or to speed up your workflow(not as a crutch)
https://www.google.com/webdesigner/ is a free tool I just saw. Haven't used it yet.

Thanks a lot :D

Those are excellent tools to start with.
A lot depends on what you want. Are you starting this as a business or personal? How much experience do you have with web development? Can you write a basic web page using HTML and a text editor only? Can you use CSS to change the styling of that page significantly? Do you know PHP or another server side language?
