hey guys merry Xmas!! I got the Magic keyboard and Magic Mouse 2 for my MacBook Pro and I was wondering if you should leave them on when not in use? I tried turning them off, but then I had to wait for them to reconnect before I can wake my computer from sleep. So should I just leave them on all the time? Obviously if I know I'm going to be away from my computer for a long time I'll shut them off. Thanks!!

Yes, the magic devices don't stay on if you are not actually using them. They both power down after some period of time.
They are not Off, as such, but something like a standby mode. Press a key on keyboard, or press a mouse button, and they come right back up.

You don't need to ever shut them off unless you're shoving them in a bag for transport or something like that. They power manage on their own - same way you don't power down your iPhone when you put it in your pocket.

+1

I think the off switches are primarily for putting them into bags. If your machine is set to wake on bluetooth activity, it would otherwise wake when they are bumped. For desk use it is an unnecessary step.

Fantastic! Ill keep them on :) I will bring my mouse to school once the new semester starts in January, so ill only switch it off for transport. Thanks again!

Hey guys I just have one more question. I'm using my MBP in clamshell mode, so do you guys think it would be ok to keep it on the floor, propped up so the fans are up to avoid overheating, to keep my desk setup simple? Where do you guys keep your MBP when in clamshell mode?

Maybe look into one of those Henge docks. It's probably not awful to keep it on the floor, but it's not the best place for it either. I don't use mine in clamshell mode since I'm more often than not doing heavier tasks - and I love the retina display. I wouldn't choose an external screen over the built-in one unless it was a 4K or 5K model.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too! It's probably not the best place for it. Plus I feel guilty because I love it so much haha. I have a crappy LG display (so old I had to get a VGA to thunderbolt adapter). I want to get a better display asap, but for now it's alright. Plus I didn't want to invest in a good display until I knew I'd like the clamshell mode setup. For Xmas I got the wireless keyboard and mouse and I'm very happy with the setup. Now I need to get a better monitor :D

This is the sleekest way to use clamshell mode IMO:

Check out the Dell P2415Q and P2715Q - they're incredible retina-like 4K IPS displays for super cheap. I have a couple of these and they're insane for the price.

Wow man I just checked out those monitors and I'm very impressed!! I will definitely get one for my setup!

Here's a pic of my setup. I have my MBP on a stand that's meant to display a book haha. http://i1024.photobucket.com/albums/y305/danielh3102/IMG_1036_zpsnb22dztk.jpg

Hey, whatever works as long as it has air flow around it and is protected from accidents and dust. Putting it on the floor - dust would be my biggest concern.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. The way I have it now the fans are under the top tier of my desk, so it's well protected from dust. Thinking about leaving it there.

That's actually pretty awesome. Just add a 4K monitor and you've got a really dope setup.

Thanks! I appreciate it! I really do have to get a 4K monitor. This one is very low res, but the colors aren't too bad. As soon as I recover from the holiday debt I'll grab a 4K monito :D

personally i own a 15 inch 2016 Macbook and got on order two of the 27 inch LG 5ks, and going to buy the

iQunix Edin for Macbook Pro/Air ,Vertical Desktop Aluminium Adjustable Stand
