Is it bad for your battery to leave it charging at 100% while in use?

What is the most optimal way to retain battery juice?

It's fine. Just make sure you complete at least 1 charge cycle per month. Remember that 1 charge cycle does not mean running it down to 0% and then re-charging back to 100%.

What does a recharge cycle mean? I usually leave it on 24/7, charging it when I get home and during the night, while using it on the Subway.

One cycle is a combined total of a full discharge and recharge. So it can be 100% > 0% > 100%, but that's the least healthy way to do it for long term battery condition.

One cycle is also going from 100% > 50% > 100% twice, which is a much more gentle way to use the battery - lithium ion cells do not like being deep discharged.

So, using the computer on battery and charging it up normally is usually more than adequate to maintain battery health.
