everytime i read about LED's on apple's site
they always mention how LEDs are so great cause they instantly light up
is that really what makes LEDs a big deal cause thats all apple raves about

They are non-toxic compared with CFLs (non mercury).

They withstand shock a LOT better than CFLs.

They don't require hi voltage supplies to drive them. (less likelihood of power-supply / modulation noise heard)

Less flicker seen, and better performance in cold temperatures.

Power consumption getting better and better - which equates to longer runtimes over CFLs.

Lower heat generation than a CFL.

Ability to space / locate as many sources as required for the display - instead of being limited by shape / length of a CFL tube.

Edit: oops CFL = Compact Fluorescent Lamp.

Old LCDs with CCFL backlights would take 20-30 minutes to fully 'warmup'. LCDs do not have this behavior, and are much brighter from the get-go. They also use less battery, have a longer lifetime, strain my eyes ;), and are more environmentally friendly
