left speaker not working right in WIN XP

hi. had a problem with the left speaker where it would be distorted and much softer than the right. this was in mac and windows and only with the internal speakers. the mac guy on the phone told me to reset the computer holding OPTION+APPLE+R+P. this actually fixed it in mac os x which was a relief cause i thought my hardware was ****ed. unfortunately in windows it is still broken. any clues?
