I have had Apple Remote Desktop installed on my parent's Mac Mini since the mid-Tiger days. It always worked beautifully for me to fix little things or show them how to do stuff while I was away at college and they were home.
I upgraded both machines to Leopard (mine is a MBP), and now all of a sudden I cannot access their computer via ARD over the internet. It works great when I'm on the same LAN as them, but that's kind of useless because that means I'm home and can just walk over to the computer to show them something.
I know Leopard has built-in screen sharing in iChat 3, but I've paid for ARD and it's much more robust so I'd rather use that.
Their setup at home is this:
-Verizon FiOS 20 down/5 up
-Core Solo Mac Mini
-10.5.2
-ARD Client 3.2.1
-ActionTec router from Verizon (I have their computer set as the DMZ with a static IP)
-Leopard firewall is allowing ARDAgent.app (added manually) and
Apple Remote Desktop is listed above it in the pre-filled in, non-editable section reserved for specific services you've enabled
Again, it works fine when on the same LAN but not over the internet. This leads me to believe it has to be a firewall issue -- either with the router or computer. But with the firewall essentially removed from this setup, I can't figure out why this isn't working.
With this setup, trying it over the internet gives me the "Connection Failed" message. Also, what's weird is when I'm on the LAN ARD correctly lists the computer name as "Mac Mini" but over the internet when I add the computer by IP address it comes up as "Wireless_Broadband_Router".
I'd put my money on the stupid actiontec router (whose settings are the hardest thing to navigate in the world...who the hell designed the software for that thing?), but I can't replace it because it's got the FiOS modem inside of it.
Any suggestions?
