Good morning. I have the latest OS X Leopard Development, and I would like to know if you recommend me installing it on my main computer, install it on an external drive, or do not install it at all.

Please, anyone who is using Leopard, tell me what is good and bad about it.

Thanks, Kiko.

Ok, well being that it is a beta, it wouldn't be smart to use it as a main OS.

Can't really say much else, I would assume you did not get this legally and we can't discuss it around here.

I did get it legally, how dare you say something like that?

But can I install it in my external drive?

Yes you can install it on your external drive, is it a firewire drive? Not sure if it matters though

Why do I dare say something like that? Because people are posting the same thing and we have to assume they are not a developer and they downloaded it illegally and they are looking for advice on how to use a product that hasn't been released to the public.

Accusing someone of doing something illegal on public is against federal law.

And it's an USB drive. Also, can I partition the drive so that only a part of it uses Leopard? And even booting from the drive, can I save stuff and load files from my internal drive?

You have to wipe the drive via Disk Utility and split it into 2 partitions, so when you install the OS you select what partition you want. This applies to any OS, not just Leopard.

But can I load and save files on my internal drive and only use the external drive for the OS? Anyhow, how much space do you recommend for the OS (by itself I suppose it uses 20), so probably 40Gb if just OS and all the drive if not.

I think you can just use the internal drive for data stuff, never tried it before.

40 gigs sounds reasonable, depends how big your drive is.

I have 2 250gb drives, but 1 is full already. The full one is 6 months old, and the empty one is a week old, but I think the speed is the same, but I am using the new one.

Dude, if you got it legally, you're a developer. A developer will know how to install a friggin OS on an external disk.

You don't just join an established forum like this and claim you're a developer while asking us how to install Leopard beta on an external drive. How dare YOU insult our intelligence like this?

I smell wasteland.

oooh...that's good...haven't heard that one today

problems with using the leopard beta (for other than development purposes)

1) is not secure
2) laptop battery gets drained waaay to fast
3) might crash like windows for no apparent reason (like windows)

this is why it's not available to the general public

the leopard beta will be a worse experience than tiger as a home OS...the coverflow finder and dock will get old as soon as you get hacked, or safari crashes

peace out

Same here.
What's taking this one so long?

Lamina, thank you for having the courage to state the obvious. I don't claim to be a developer but even I know how to partition a hard drive.

So if you're not a developer, you have Leopard illegally, and we don't help people with illegal stuff... so we can't help you out.

I wasn't asking for help, nor did I claim to have Leopard (I don't). I was only backing up your claim that someone who was a developer should be able to manage to install it. I'll buy Leopard along with everyone else in Oct.

Me thinks lamina got you and the OP mixed up there.

With all due respect had you downloaded the beta from ADC and you are a select or premier member you wouldn't be asking this question since there's a seed note that is available for this seed. And almost any member of the ADC normally knows what their doing.

Thanks to MacsRgr8 and PsychoFreak! My feelings weren't hurt--I have thick skin since I'm a college professor!--I just didn't want to leave the impression that I was a troll on MR. Thanks again guys!

college professor!!!

omg **** off...half of us go to uni/college and know what they're like

and the childish way you announced it proves your thread is going to wasteland
