This past Monday night I was working in Blender and all of a sudden my iMac froze. The beach ball kept spinning and spinning. After about 10 minutes (hoping the computer would regain its composure), I had to do a hard shutdown. I gave the computer a few minutes to rest and turned the iMac back on. This time however, the computer started hanging on the screen where the apple logo pops up. After 15 minutes of watching the circle go around and around, I did another hard shutdown. Waited a few more minutes and then it got to the blue screen where it just hung! Finally, after an hour of waiting and hard shut downs, the computer restarted normally. I was too busy to repair permissions and clear caches as it was late, and I had other assignments to complete.
Tonight, I was checking email and chatting on Yahoo Messenger, when I tried to open iChat. The damned beach ball came back and yep, you guessed it, the computer froze again!! This time is a little different.. after 3 hours of playing around with the damed thing, I can see my desktop and files, however everything is un-clickable and nothing will start properly.
To add insult to injury, I cannot use my wireless apple keyboard the iMac came with because that has seemed to stop working entirely. I have new batteries in it, yet won't power on correctly. Thus, any special apple shortcuts via the keyboard, I cannot do. I have a regular keyboard attached to the iMac via usb.
Any thoughts? Help! My machine is only 1 year old and was working perfectly up until now.
