leopard install and external HD

Ok I am getting ready to instal leaopard today on my PMG5 I have a lacie hard drive I use for backups. I have been using there one touch back up. soo her goes.

would would the forum recomend to do? I have just done a back up.
here is what my brother said...unplug all firewire devices inccluding ipod. upgrade OS. make sure everything is working. then plug in hard drive and let time machine do its thing.

will time maching erase my old backup?
do I need to reformate my hard drive and erase my old info before using time machine. help me

I think you will need to partition the HD for TM to not erase it all. Disk Utility in Leopard can do this without you losing any data. Also, TM doesn't just go automatically, you have to set it up for the first time.
