It's my understanding that this will be possible in the coming months. Is it like to be significantly cheaper than Apple's offerings?
 
Probably not right away but I suspect that within about 12 months the cost of DIY flash memory upgrades will be lower than the original upgrade cost from Apple. I am also counting on the size and speed of the flash memory to go up at the same time so that 512 GB will be about the same as the original cost of a 256 GB upgrade from Apple.

If not there is always the option of a USB powered micro HD to hold data, photos, and music files. The stock 128 GB memory should be plenty of room for the operating system and programs, anyway.
