Just curious...are there any issues with the new IOS 11 image format, High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIC)? Is it recognized universally like the JPG standard?

Are there any OTHER advantages to the format (ie. quality, etc) other than the files are about 50% smaller? If I get a 256gb iPhone, the size of the images will not be that big of a deal. I'm just trying to sort it all out.

I don't think it is recognized universally. Quite a few apps, the phone has to convert the image to JPG for it to work. The image format allows you to do a lot more with the image file - it becomes a storage file for images and audio. A pretty good article: http://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/iphone/what-is-heic-3660408/

What I find strange is that Amazon Photos backs up the .heic but it's like 3x the size (10-12MB per file). Google stores the .heic as well but I think it does compression on it just like it does with .jpg as the .heic files in Google Photos is 1-2mb. On the iPhone itself, these files appear as JPG strangely enough when I plug into my PC (2-7mb).
