A letter I just sent to Steve. I need to leave the apple store no later than 10am so I can catch a plane, so here's hoping. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to order a phone for delivery. It was reserve for store pickup or nothing. :|

Any thoughts?

Steve,

Any chance of collecting upgrade authorization from AT&T for reserved
iPhones prior to Thursday? So that there's no chance of AT&T's
servers giving Apple another black eye?

Here's mine:

Dear Steve,

Please let Amazon handle your pre-orders next time. You've pointed out you are not in the logistics business, so let Jeff help you.

Love,

Me

That's actually a really good idea, I'm surprised they haven't done that before.

Or to be realistic

How about

Dear Mr Jobs, the next time you want to launch a product, could you do the following:

A) Have in stock what you promised (ie people can have phones and the colour they wanted).

B) Sort out the process with the telephone networks before you announce it so that they are on board well before the date you have announced to the world when in fact they are not.
The world and her mother knew iPhone4 would be announced at WWDC, so why are networks still telling customers they know nothing of it (...available from 24 June... (if you are lucky).
AT&T may have know but could not cope. UK networks knew nothing while in Germany supply was so obviously underestimated.

C) If you manage to crack the above, make the ordering process - ie we would like to give you our money - a damn sight easier than this was.

D) Apologise properly when it all goes tits up. Getting it wrong is one thing, not recognising this just p's people off even more, but if you acknowledge the mistakes we think more of you.

Yours

A (I was trying to be again) customer.

PS As Apple doesn't pay dividends, does this make you think that you can seriously f-things up and people will not complain?
