Just returned the LG 29EA73-P ultra wide monitor I recently purchased at Best Buy. It was nice for video and pictures, but text/font seemed blurry on it. I was using it for work answer emails and working on spreadsheets so the text issue was big. I am using a late model 2013 13" retina mbp and I tried everything to make the font/text look better but nothing seemed to work. Even worked with LG a few times and their only answer was to try and switch the hdmi cable I was using.

Any recommendations for a new monitor I should consider that would be better suited for emails and spreadsheets.

That display is basically a 1080p display at a big 29" (2560x1080).
An image that large with only 1080 pixels of height is going to have some rough looking text. If you want to stick to a 1080p-class display, keep it at 23" inches or so. If you're looking at 1920x1200 pixels, stick to 24" or so. Above that, you need to look at 2560x1440 displays to keep text nice and sharp.

If you like the ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratios, LG is coming out with 29" and 34" 3440x1440 ultra-wide displays next month (presuming your Mac can drive them).

Thanks, I will need to look into the high resolution monitor. It will do what I looking for.

Font smoothing has been notoriously problematic on all third party monitors connected to Macs. There have been a bunch of discussions and work arounds, but I ended up just magnify (zoom in) the text a bit to make it larger and clearer. The retina display on my 15 inch rMBP has spoiled me.
