I read this was discontinued, so I snagged one for $899 from NewEgg.

They shipped it in it's original box (only). Not box-in-a-box like I expected.

It must have gotten smacked. Part of the bezel was popped-out when it arrived. Looked bad, but it snapped right back into place.

The display seems fine -- I generally love it -- but unless my eyes are deceiving me, it seems like it is auto-dimming. Perhaps based on what is being displayed? If I'm looking at spreadsheets in Excel, it seems to get quite a bit brighter than when I'm just browsing the web or even messing around with Lightroom. I just minimized this Safari window and when I brought it back up it seemed dark at first and then got brighter as I was typing.

Is this a setting I can disable? Ever heard of this before?

If it's defective I'd like to get it swapped-out with NewEgg sooner than later.

Yes, just disable the Smart Energy Saving feature in menu. It's a perfect replacement to Thunderbolt Display to my Macbook Pro Retina Late 2013 with GT750M.
