Hi all,
I have just received a 2018 MBP 13'' (512/i5/8 GB RAM) and a LG 5K. While the screen is just marvelous, I do notice quite som lagging. The animation when minimizing programs, shifting desktops and the like clearly skips some of the frames and seems choppy and sloppy.
Is this what to expect from the integrated graphic card of the 2018 MBP? Does the LG 5K really need a 15'' with a dedicated to run smoothly?
I am still on high sierra (just did a time machine migration), but could install all afresh including Majove. Perhaps that will help?

In any case: I would very much like to get some impressions from you running a setup like this or a 15'' setup. I am planning to have this combo for quite some years, and we are off to a bad start, if it feels sloppy already now ...

I have a '17 MBP 15" TB 3.1GHz with DG and do not notice any lag either as a mirror, secondary, or clam shell. Currently on macOS 10.14.2 and only been using it for a couple of days. Typical use is an IDE, browser, terminal, finder, GIMP, etc. with on average 3-4 programs alternating between. Just chiming in to give you some insight that perhaps it's the Intel IG for your MBP. Of course, you also have 8GB of memory and that can reach capacity very quickly depending upon what you're using it for to include the 5K resolution. This is a lot of pixels to push at that refresh rate. Although I realize this is not the reason you purchased this display; try reducing the resolution and scaling for a day or so to test if you still notice the lag. If it reduces or is eliminated, then your hardware isn't meeting the needs to operate the display at 5K. For your MBP, I would have suggested nothing over 4K. I'm aware of the manufacturer stating support. But, it's my opinion regarding software that if my hardware doesn't equal or exceed the average of the requirements, then it's not satisfactorily capable of meeting the demand.

I use it with 2016 13" without any slowdowns. Try turning off transparency.

Yes, the 13” MBP struggles to drive the LG 5K smoothly.

I use a maxed-out 2017 13” MBP, and I switched from two Apple Thunderbolt Displays to one LG 5K and the reduction in UI performance (especially for things like scrolling, moving windows around, or UI animation) was clear in the first few seconds of use. It’s disappointing.

I’m actually going to switch to a 15” MBP (probably with Vega) for exactly this reason.
