I have a Mac mini connected via thunderbolt to an LG Ultrafine 5k...that, according to the technical specifications on the website supports HDCP 2.2. Why is it that when you try to watch Netflix, it does not register 4K? Anyone have any understanding around this?

Thanks,
Matt

You meet all these requirements?

To stream in Ultra HD, you will need:

A Mac computer with macOS 11.0 Big Sur installed.

The latest version of Safari browser

Select 2018 or later Mac computer with an Apple T2 Security chip

A 60Hz 4K capable display (with HDCP 2.2 connection if external display).NOTE: Every monitor connected to your computer must meet these requirements to successfully stream in Ultra HD.

A Netflix plan that supports streaming in Ultra HD.

A steady internet connection speed of 25 megabits per second or higher.

Streaming quality set to Auto or High.

NOTE: 4K Ultra HD support for macOS 11.0 Big Sur is currently in development may not be available at all times.

I am using a Mac mini 2018 which is on the list from Apple for Support of 4K Netflix in Safari with the new Big Sur Update.

The Display is the LG 5k Ultrafine, using a Thunderbolt3 connection but is 2.2 HDCP capable.

My internet is fine, and I have the 4K Netflix. Maybe its just Big Sur Limitations? Or the monitor being 5k instead of 4? Still weird if Youtube can properly show 4k video.

Thanks,
Matt

If the problem is 5K, then what if you try selecting a 4K timing using SwitchResX (make sure it's not a scaled timing)?
Or, if you have the latest LG UltraFine 5K currently being sold by Apple, then you can connect via USB-C to force 4K only mode.

Hey, I tried this option as well, it doesn't work. I think it might be LG 5Ks compatibility with video playback. It shows 4K in the Apple TV app and Youtube, other than that I haven't seen an option. I'm assuming it's probably a mixture of both web and monitor for Netflix.

Thanks,
Matt

Have you tested any other displays? You need one display that works to prove there's a problem with the LG UltraFine 5K.
