Lg external 24x burner issues

I just bought a lg external DVD burner and all it came with is windows software. I plugged it in and I can open the tray and that but it doesn't seem to reconize the device. What are the steps I need to take to fix this and get this thing running. My MacBook pro is two years old and I have os x. It's not leopard. Please help. I'm not to computer savy sorry. Any advice would be great
