Am I right in thinking that Light Peak is backwards compatible with FireWire and USB? Does that mean removing FireWire is a non-issue? And we could buy Light Peak to FireWire adapters?

From what I understand, you're completely right. However, the issue with adapters is that they can be a pain to have to carry around.

Yes.
Theoretically on the new MacBooks, if we see Light peak implemented, they could do away with USB and FireWire, and just have 3 or so LightPeak ports.
LightPeak just works with USB, and if I remember correctly FireWire 400 & 800 need an adapter.
Although, as the previous poster mentioned, are you willing to carry around 2 adapters everywhere you go?

i think we're all going to have to wait to see what the standard brings as the tech demo from last year was using modified USB ports, and at that time, they specifically stated that the port design was not finalized.
