Light up keyboard

I have a MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Sometimes the backlight for the keyboard goes out. When I press F5 or F6 this comes up on the screen:
It is slightly annoying and I want to get it fixed if necessary. Do you think that I need to take it to the Apple Store or what? Any help would be appreciated.

Check the keyboard setting in system setting

It is probably due to too much available ambient light. Hold your hand in front of the iSight camera on top of the display to fool the ambient light sensor and see the keyboard backlight do its work (manually and automatically)?

go to system preferences and disable the auto adjust of the keyboard backlight.

Ahh... You were right and I am stupid... lol I had auto-brightness on.

You could also possibly have a defective ALS. Are you in a bright room? It is supposed to dim/turn off the keyboard backlight when it's not necessary.

Even with "Illuminate keyboard in low-light situations" turned off, if the ambient light is too bright, you cannot manually adjust the keyboard backlight brightness. Again, fool the ambient light sensor as advised before. Unless I am understanding you wrong.

I have this on my MBP (2010) and MBA too. The light only turns itself off in the daytime or when I'm outside. I think it depends on how much light is in the room you're using the laptop in.
