I read that Apple may be pulling lightning accessories off the market soon and we should act now if we need accessories. My husband and I have Iphone 14s and airpods with lightning connectors. The only accessories we have are power adapters + cables. I can see a future where it is hard to get lightning accessories…..but I can’t think of anything we’d need other than maybe extra cables/power adapters…….what other accessories should we get, if any? Any thoughts/suggestions ??? thanks! Donna

I don't see accessories disappearing anytime soon. Cables will be around for some time to come, maybe not from Apple but certainly from 3rd parties. I don't know what else YOU might need. There are adapters that let you connect to a TV over HDMI; read the contents of an SD card or use one as external storage; and so on.

Lightning connector was introduced more than 11 years ago.

Its predecessor, 30 pin connector, is still being offered for sale today.

A decade from now do you see yourself using devices with Lightning?

Say, Lightning was stopped being offered brand new it will be available used on eBay.

good points, thanks! i was concerned that I might not be able to get replacement power cables, but I think you’re both right, they’ll be around for a while. I’m not a huge fan of buying third-party accessories, in general, and definitely not for power. These days, you have to be careful and research what you purchase/who you purchase it from. (e.g. I had read many stories of hubs bricking Macs due to power issues when I was searching for a hub online). However, lightning accessories will probably be around for a while…..we will see!

Apple still sells the 30 pin connector cable and hasnt had a product use it in over a decade. Lightning isnt going anywhere, especially any time before you'd upgrade your phones. Apple still has several iPhone models theyre currently selling with Lightning.

3rd parties aren't as bad as you project it to be.

Naturally, don't buy from fly by night makers or obvious knock offs.

$1.00 Lightning cables from bargain basement brands are best to be avoided when used with a fast charger.

I've noticed that persons looking to hedge for the future by buying redundancies tend to never use them as the device gets lost, stolen or damaged beyond repair.

It is likely to be replaced and be incompatible with the stockpiled spares bought.

Mind you, I am speaking from experience.

For example:

1) 12 hours earlier a $270 UGREEN 300W fast charger that launched last week was being offered for $86 on a flash sale.

I did not buy it as I already have half a dozen multiport USB-C + USB-A slow chargers that all still work.

2) I bought a 10 meter long miniDP to HDMI cable so I can plug my Intel MBP to a projector. Few months later Intel MBP with USB-C came out rendering it obsolete.

sorry I posted the above content accidentally. I was typing my response but then I wanted to cancel/delete and I don’t know how to do that!! It posts without my clicking “post reply”. I have to find out how to edit posts……..anyway, thank you for your comments. I think what you say makes sense, I’ll probably end up purchasing items that will never be used or will become obsolete in trying to hedge for the future.
