Is there an adapter available for plugging IPhone headphones (with lightning connection) into a normal headphone 3.5 socket?

You can get them the other way around but I can’t find an adapter to let me use my iPhone headphones with my MacBooks 3.5 socket.

Thanks.

You’d have to connect Lightning headphones to USB with an adapter like what I’ve linked below, but the adapter costs more than a 3.5mm pair of Earpods alone costs.

I don’t think that would give me sound from my MacBook through the headphones using the MacBooks usb.

Strange that Apples iPhone headphones can’t be connected to an Apple MacBook

Yes it will, that's what the adapter is designed for- the description clearly explains that. Still, it makes no sense to spend that much for an adapter.

I think the OP wants a female lightning connector to 3.5 adapter. I only seen a male lightning to 3.5

Correct.
My iPhone headphone socket has lightning connection on the end, and I want to connect the cable to my MacBooks 3.5 jack. So an adapter with a female lighting to 3.5 jack is needed. But I can't find one. Maybe I will have to use different headphones.

You cannot connect Lightning port EarPods to the headphone jack. USB is your only option.

Surely the usb socket of my MacBook won't pass audio sound out?
It definitely does– it's digital! I should add that the Lightning EarPods are also digital, which is why there's no simple adapter to go from the Lightning EarPods to the 3.5mm analog jack.

I’m trying to use standard iPhone earphones with my MacBook. Depending on the price of the adapter I may just have to buy different headphones.

Yes, you explained what you're trying to do quite clearly. The only option you have to use the iPhone headphones is to buy the USB to Lightning adapter I linked in the first reply to this thread, or to use different headphones altogether. The adapter is more expensive than a standard pair of EarPods.
