On my iPhone 6 I thought the reason my charger was temperamental was due to it being a fake lightning cable off eBay. Whenever I moved the phone so that the cable tugged slightly it would disconnect and stop charging momentarily.

On my 6s with original charger and lightning cable I am experiencing the same phenomenon!

Why can't Apple make a decent cable?

If they make it so short then of course it's going to tug whenever you try use the damn thing.

I thought apple was all about user experience but it drives me mad they can't sort simple things like this.

I've been using official Apple cables since the original iPhone and iPad and I've never had issues with the cables or the ports on the devices. Maybe you have a defective cable or lightning port but in my opinion Apple cables are as solid as they get as are the ports on their devices.

No issues with the port, but the lightning cable that came with my Air 2 came apart at the base and all the wires were showing through, so I can't say I feel they're always well made.

It's more likely that it's not the cable at all, but rather pocket lint stuck in the port. Eventually it builds up enough that the cable can't fully insert.
I'd suggest shutting the phone off and use a straightened paper clip or a toothpick to fish out any lint you can find. Then if you have some compressed air, blow that in the port to get out any leftover lint that may be lingering.

Some ports are more loose than others, just like some home buttons are more dodgy than others...
