When I buy a new car I don’t transfer all the crap and trash I had in the storage areas, under the seats and in the trunk. I consider independently what I’ll put in new car.

Migrating library folders is just that. There are hundreds of files in there from previous software installs.

In the case of audio production the installation of everything can run many, many hours. But your point is correct.

I'm doing a clean install. My iMac is 2012 and full of cruft, some of which might be left over from migrations of two previous iMacs (one G5). I'll just install the applications I want and copy the data over.
If I was transferring over from a newer, cleaner machine then I'd probably go for the migration.

I'm getting my M1 next Monday and planning a clean install. Actually all my files are synchronized via iCloud and Onedrive, and 95% of my apps are from the App Store, so it's not a big deal I guess.

One to two hours? Migration Assistant is the way to go. Before MA, it was not uncommon for me to spend one to two weeks bringing a new Mac to a productivity state comparable to the Mac that it replaced.

Ya, I do too, struggled for a good analogy. But, with a vastly different architecture, thought is was much safer to have a clean base library, tho, I'm sure it didn't mater one bit.

With the switch from Intel to ARM, I sort of agree with you. Perhaps the best solution is to migrate over for speed and ease and then create a second user where you can take your time to clean install.

OP is spot on. This is a big chance to wipe the slate clean. It takes less than a day for most people. Anybody who thinks MA is as good as a clean install is mistaken.
