so i guess we all have two folders /Applications/ and ~/Applications/

where one is in the HD directory and the other in the /Name/ directory

is there an advantage to using one versus the other?
 
Applications in ~/Applications are unique to you, whereas applications in /Applications are available to all users of the computer.

If you're not an administrator you can't install apps to /Applications but you can to ~/Applications
