My sisters friend had a program on his mac that let him change mp3 files to make them smaller i guess so that we could burn more onto cds... they dont speak anymore so i lost my connection... so do you know what i would need or how would i be able to do that?

Ultimately what is your goal? Cause there are many things you can do to convert files.
Sounds like you just want to turn mp3's into an Audio cd to play on your home stereo? In that case iTunes will do this for you, just make sure you have the settings set correctly.
File Menu>Preferences>Advanced>Burning: Disk Format-Audio CD.

Otherwise converting mp3's to other bitrates is a waste of time cause you can not benefit on an already compressed file.
