Sorry all for asking but there is so much info that it gets confusing.

Do I have to upgrade my 3gs to 4.1 from 3.1.2 using tinytss saving the baseband for unlock? This is what I did for the iphone 4. Or the baseband on 3gs with 4.1 is patchable?

TU only saves the baseband for IP4. If you what to save baseband for 3G or 3GS, you need to wait for pwnagetool. And, no baseband aren't patchable / downgradable.

That is correct what Myzhi posted above.
The 4.1 firmwares bb cannot be unlocked at the moment.
And you cannot save your baseband if you upgrade to official 4.1

I dont really care about unlock except for future resale value. If I plan to sell my 3GS when the i5 comes out there will definitely be an unlock by then correct?

We're not 100% yet but it is rumored there is a few unlock hacks still in the bag. The next one is supposed to be out after 4.2 is out so Im pretty sure you will have another opportunity later.
