Limit artist tracks on iTunes sync?

is there a way to make a filter to limit how many songs sync randomly from an artist with filters on iTunes?

i have every dave matthews stuff, including live, so it occupies a disproportionate amount of my library and makes it too represented with random syncs.

I think you can only do this with Smart playlists (Artist = Dave Matthews Band, Limit to xx songs, Selected randomly).

Then sync that playlist instead of from the artists list.

wouldn't that be only a playlist with dave ?

Then add another smart playlist with non-dave
