Where do i start...
I can output 1080p at what appears to be 24 hz, I get slightly lagged playback of videos and jerky mouse movements on the TV (as expected I think at this setting).
When I try to output 1080p at either 50 Hz (PAL) or 60 Hz (NTSC), from the options above (IMG), I get no picture at all on the TV.
Other Points to note:
I can output 1080i fine.
I am attempting to do this with mirroring off, and 1:1 pixel mapping on the TV.
I currently have problems trying to output video at all with the lid shut, Ill try again tomorrow when I get a friends external keyboard.

My problem was the dvi to hdmi cable, once I replaced that with a better quality one I got it going. Also I had to use a third party mini display port to dvi adapter, in place of the official apple branded one that didnt display any picture at all!

Update the exact connectors I'm using:
