Solved:
My problem was the dvi to hdmi cable, once I replaced that with a better quality one I got it going. Also I had to use a third party mini display port to dvi adapter, in place of the official apple branded one that didnt display any picture at all!

good luck

Update the exact connectors I'm using:

DVI -> HDMI : http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001NXPR74/ref=oss_product

Where do i start... :)

I can output 1080p at what appears to be 24 hz, I get slightly lagged playback of videos and jerky mouse movements on the TV (as expected I think at this setting).

When I try to output 1080p at either 50 Hz (PAL) or 60 Hz (NTSC), from the options above (IMG), I get no picture at all on the TV.

Other Points to note:

I can output 1080i fine.
I am attempting to do this with mirroring off, and 1:1 pixel mapping on the TV.
I currently have problems trying to output video at all with the lid shut, Ill try again tomorrow when I get a friends external keyboard.

Update:
It seems I am only able to set the resolution to 480,720,1080i and get a picture on the tv. Not to any resolutions like, 1600x900 or 1400x900 when mirroring.
When I try to set it to on of these resolutions I get a black screen on my tv.

Hey mate, I have the very same problem, I was starting to think something is wrong with my Macbook.
I have tried on different TVs/Monitors too.
Did you find any solution to this problem?

Thats interesting.
I have a mini DP to HDMI cable.
I haven't used it for a couple months but i could have sworn that it used to do 1080p fine then when i went to use it the other day i had the same problem as you.
I suppose the cable must have been damaged while in storage.
I will try a new one and see what happens.

Amazing that the Apple branded product gave you no picture at all.
