I've started tethering my Macbook (running Mavericks) to my iPad sharing its cellular data while away from home. I'm looking to limit the amount of background data the Mac uses while still maintaining some essential connections, such as Safari and iMessage.

I've turned off auto updates from the App store and I only launch Dropbox when I'm on my home wifi. I've disabled all accounts other than iCloud and turned off most notifications and photo sync.

Others must face a similar situation. Any other tips would be appreciated. :)
