Is there a way on OS X (for Macbook Pro) to completely limit and monitor data usage while tethering?

I tried tethering my iPad a year ago, and I used 1GB of data in like 10 seconds. It was ridiculous. I had turned off auto updating, but I guess it did something the moment it had an ultra fast connection.

I'm worried that if I turn off auto updates, that there'll still be processes that use up tons of data when tethering. I have a 2GB data limit on my phone (wish I could get unlimited, or 20GB, or something useful, but in Canada that's a no-go).
