Line-In Audio Static

I am having an annoying problem with the line-in port on my 2012 MBP. What I am trying to do is be able to hook my xbox 360 audio into the line-in port and use the LineIn app to set up a passthrough so that I can hear both the game sounds as well as whatever music I have playing on my MBP. This almost works, but my problem is that the audio coming through the line-in port has a ton of static and the game noise is very quiet. This happens both with headphones and the MBP's speakers. I have played around with the input audio sound level and the Audio MIDI Setup settings but nothing seems to have any effect. Has anybody gotten this to work?
