line in on g5 may be broken

hi all, I have a problem. I have never used the line in on the back of my g5 before and now that i have tried to use it, it won't work. I am trying to use the analog line in, but when I plug in my radioshack microphone, it's as if nothing is plugged in. it doesn't get any input at all and i have set it to line in in the sound preferences. is my line in broken?:( please help! ps im running 10.3
