"cool solidarity"?

Gotta remember that concept.

Is dude still used often? It seems to me it has passed it's prime.

All seems pretty obvious. Then again, I am pretty young and cool ;)

I've marveled at the mileage the right speaker can get out of that single word:

"Dude!" = "Woah!"
"Dude." = "Be serious, please."
"Duuuude." = "That was amazing."
"Dude?" = "Excuse me?"
"Dude?" = "Are you paying attention?"
"Dude." = "Dude."

i tried to cut down on using it after the Dell Dude came about, but it remains a hard part of my vocab.

I'm infamous in my little circle for the phrase "dude-woman". this is after the women in my life objected to simply being called "dude". So you always know i'm at a party if you hear someone shout "dude-woman, where did you put the beer?" or "dude-woman, pass that doob over here".

fascinating story, no? hehe... interesting that someone else says it can be used for women. As for the non-homo connotation, that depends on the person. One of my past boyfriends and I simply called each other "dude". then again, maybe it's why we didn't work...

What was the film with that dude Bridges in it? The Big Leobowski or something. One of the most under-rated movies when it was out in the UK.

On a similar subject I once had a great article that show the multiple correct use's of everybody most versertile 'F' word. If I can find it I'll post it. (moderated for those of a sensetive nature)

i use "dude" all the time. my sisters and i use it a lot. as soon as i call one of them i'll say "dude!" and she'll respond "duuuude!".

its funny because i understand exactly what they are trying to say w/o them needing to explain.

There's definitely a lot of "dude" usage in Northern California. More so than "bro". I hate "bro".

Quit calling me bro, dude. :D

"His students also reported that they were least likely to use the word with parents, bosses and professors."

This statement definitely indicates that it isn't proper use of English. To me that was a waste of time to write the paper.

Well, that would explain why you're not a linguist then. Or in touch with anyone under 50.

I say dude pretty much constantly.

Like Paul, I've tried not to say it as much, but it's just burned itself into my brain. It's not going anywhere.

After reading this, I am reminded by that scene in BASEketball where they carry on a conversation using only the word dude.

Coop: I'm not gonna do it, dude, end of story!
Douglas "Swish" Reemer: Dude!
Coop: Dude!
Douglas "Swish" Reemer: Dude!
Coop: Dude!
Douglas "Swish" Reemer: Dude!
[Coop looks shocked]
Douglas "Swish" Reemer: Dude.
Coop: I see your point.

Nice!

It kind of sucks that most of the dudes I still call dude are all corporatized and give each other funny looks because of how much I still use it. Like Paul it's a burned in part of my speech, and like Jovian9 it's mostly due to the supreme dudes Bill S. Preston Esq. and Ted "Theodore" Logan. . .

I've always used the word "dude." I think it started with the ninja turtles, and was reinforced by Bill & Ted. Come to think of it, I'm sure my parents, who were in the whole rock/metal scene, also had something to do with it.

I don't think I or any of my roommates can have a conversation where everyone doesn't say "dude" at least once.

I love the word, and will never stop using it. Hmmm, I wonder if I can get my screen name changed..... :D
