Link band and wireless charging pad

Last Tuesday Apple unveiled the new wireless charging pad that will be released next year and said the new Apple Watch will be able to use it. Am I right that this won't work if the Watch has the SS link band since there's no easy way to lay it down flat?

Correct. You would have to separate the links in order to lay it flat on the pad for to charge. The AirPad has to have contact with the watch.
