Professional-focused networking site LinkedIn has updated its iOS app today, adding native iPad support to the app for the first time. The universal app also offers support for Retina graphics on the new iPad.

- Optimized for Retina display on the new iPad
- New calendar feature lets you see LinkedIn profile information for people you're meeting with
- Redesigned updates view lets you easily stay up-to-date with connections, industry news, groups, and more.
The new calendar feature, available on both iPad and iPhone, integrates with the user's on-device calendar to help business users easily view information on their meeting contacts at a glance.

I'm on LinkedIn more than I am here.. and that's saying something.
The new Calendar integration looks great and works really well. I updated the app only a few hours ago.

It's a surprisingly good professional networking site. Some people try to turn it into facebook, but I think this is definitely newsworthy, as linkedin users are huge into iPhones

It WAS a good professional networking site, but it's trying to become your business calendar and social network, and that's just not working. Also, for the past few months I've gotten inundated with requests from "friends" who I know are complete strangers and have nothing to do with my life and never did.

I agree

+1

I'd be more willing to try LinkedIn if I wasn't receiving copious amounts of spam from them, without ever so much as loading up their site.

I am curious, what do people use LinkedIn for? I know what it offers, and I am signed up and everything...but I found it to be a pretty frustrating communication channel compared with good old email and Skype. I can imagine that it is nice to show off one's portfolio, but what would one regularly do on LinkedIn from an iPhone?

It can act as a portal for tweets and emails from business contacts.
It also helps the user to follow companies, groups and job ads.

Yes, you can link your portfolio to your profile page (through Behance). I do. And I use it everyday.

Right. It use to be good and simple. Now it seems to be some-half-baked-social-working-twitterific hybrid. I still use it although as I'm a consultant. (Jobs opportunities are good and still easier to find than any job-work-searching website).

I guess that's part of their "new" we-re-trying-to-force-you-to-go-to-the-website-just-to-try-to-find-where-you-can-disable-those-email-digests-options strategy. Also, in the last few months, I mostly received invitations and messages from job agencies (which in my case is not bad but could be considered spam somehow if you can't find the way to disable those options...)

Their UI is not much better than Facebook in it's worst days (prior top this update, at least)...

It's helpful for keeping track of business colleagues, particularly as they move around. For me it's like facebook stripped of all the garbage and moved to a professional world--updates (far fewer) of professional accompishments rather than baby's first steps or buddy's fiftieth hangover.
