Linking iPhone with school e-mail

I go to Umass Boston, I've called the IT department numerous times and they say they do not support e-mail on the iPhone or blackberry. I have seen people with it on both and am curious if anyone could help me figure it out...

all you need it the server name, protocol (POP, IMAP, etc) and then your username and password.

i couldn't imagine that there wouldn't be a port open for handhelds...

ask someone with it on already
