So,

Looking into installing linux onto a 2009 MBP 5.5 - dual core , 4GB RAM (need to upgrade to 8 for what I want to do). Haven't used linux in well over a decade so wayyyyyy out of the loop.

I have questions:
1. Is there a good guide for this somewhere ?

2. Which linux ? I need to run something called OpenBugs (64bit) which runs on Fedora 16 - 18, and Debian 64bit. And "Compilation has been successful on 64-bit Ubuntu using the g++-multilib package, and on 64-bit Fedora using the glibc-devel package. " - what does all this mean in terms of choosing an optimal linux build for 2009 machine ?

3. Will linux on the machine be able to utilise 8GB ram ? Deal breaker this one as my models will be >4Gb

4. The machine currently has OsX and Win NT on it though Bootcamp. What is the best way to install linux - also through bootcamp ? Or ? I can lose the Windows partition if needs be I don't use it.

Appreciate any advice! :)
