linux on a imac g5

so i downloaded a ubuntu installer iso file off ubuntu.com, and i burned it to a disk. so i put it in my imac, by the way i have no idea if the hard drive i put in there is formated for mac use, i dont accually know how. but so, it wouldnt read the file, and in some cases, it came out of the disk drive and fell behind my desk.

does anyone know what im doing wrong?

When I was installing ubuntu (alternate install) I put the disk in and it just booted up (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/precise/release/). The main issue I had was that it didn't eject the disk when I put it the wrong way. Had to open er up and touch 2 contacts together! I was using a windows formatted hdd.
Id recommend using ubuntu mate instead of standard ubuntu though, more up to date. (https://ubuntu-mate.org/download/)

Did you download the PowerPC version?

EDIT:
Ubuntu 12.04 was the last vanilla Ubuntu PowerPC Desktop release:

Otherwise Ubuntu Mate 16.04.3 is the current, still supported PowerPC option:
