My MBP froze when I quit Twitter, it beachballed then Finder froze too. I turned it off with the Power Button, restarted, logged in (as Admin) and then it froze again. The mouse can move and I can click on Finder windows but that's about it.

I've got iStat running and it says CharacterPalette is using 90% of my CPU (nothing else is above 2 or 3 %).

The problem disappears when I log in as another user. I've restarted in Safe Mode and reset the SMC (not sure if that actually helped in anyway) but to no avail. I've left it running hoping it would sort itself but after 2 hours it's still beachballing.

Any ideas what's happened? More importantly, any idea how to fix it?

Just taking a wild guess here, if possible, try and open the Activity Monitor application and force quit the CharacterPallette application.

Note: I'm not an experienced user, exercise caution if deciding to follow the above advice

what is CharacterPalette's?

Ahh - but it's frozen and I can't click (or tab) to anything.

I can start to open Activity Monitor (via iStat) but it freezes before it loads.

CharacterPalette is a process.
