lion ... how to display widgets on desktop?

If I turn off the preference so that widgets are in their own space ... how do I put one ( or more ) of them onto my main desktop?

I found an old reference to a terminal command and then a way to use F12 to move them back and forth.

Not sure if that is still viable and/or if there is not a better way to do it in Lion?
