Ok so I have a 2009 uMB, I was planning on re-imaging my 2011 Base Mini with legal license for Lion, however when I set the recovery image to an External HDD, I am wondering if I can try the install on my uMB even though I do not have a license for it yet.

I only want to try this because I am not sure how Lion will react on my uMB, so I am just trying it, however if it works, I may either download from the app store of buy a USB key.

The worst part is I have to re-install Lion on my Mini to get the full package on my external HDD.

Anyone else have a better way?

The license and recovery partition you get on the 2011 Mini with purchase won't work on any Mac that doesn't ship with Lion. It does a serial number check (or some other check) to make sure it came with Lion originally.

UNLESS you mount the MBP as a disk on the mini using target disk mode. Then the mini's recovery partition will allow you to install lion on the external drive.
