Today I nervously replaced my stock Seagate 5400rpm drive with a brand new hard drive. I hardly had any data on the computer as it is fairly new so I decided to do a clean of install of Lion.
Hard drive swap was straight forward, I watched a LOT of videos and was still nervous but did it successfully. I had previously made the USB stick for Lion Recovery and plugged it into my Macbook Pro and booted up. I was able to format the disk using Disk Utility and then was able to download Lion in minutes (Hurray 100Mbps connection) This Macbook came with SL and the "Internet Recovery" worked flawlessly with the Lion recovery assistant.
One very happy camper right now. So even if your Macbook does not have the built in Internet Recovery; the Lion Recovery Assistant WILL allow you to do it!
Just thought I'd share my story and that little bit of info

*Note: In order to create the USB recovery stick you MUST have a Mac with Lion and the Recovery HD installed
