I have an April 2008 Macbook running 10.6.8. Looks like I just miss the cut-off date (late 2008) for installing Mountain Lion. My computer is working well and that is why I haven't installed Lion. Some of the newer Apps and Software are now requiring Lion. Since I am not upgrading my Macbook yet, should I install Lion now that is has settled down - and will that keep me going in good shape for another year?

It should. There has also been progress is getting Mountain Lion working on older Core2Duo Macs like yours. Hopefully it will continue working as it currently is when Mountain Lion is released this summer.
