I tried backup with TM on 10.7 and 10.7.1 but it just gets hang on "preparing backup". I left it overnight and it will just hang. I couldn't eject the TM HDD. I had to force quit the TM system preference. All programs becomes very slow and opening any apps/clicking anything will result beachball.

Can anyone help?

I reboot and it's the same. I have a 2011 MBP 13''.

How are you backing up? Is it to a Time Capsule? Directly to a Hard Drive? External Hard drive?

Is the backup a new backup? Is it one you used with Snow Leopard previously?

I am using an external hdd using USB. That hdd has backup from previous leopard.

you probably don't have enough space on that external drive. It doesn't overwrite your snow leopard back up, it creates a new one with Lion.

I had to completely erase all of my snow leopard saves and start anew. It backed up fine then.
