Lion wakeup on Wifi doesn't work

I have a new 2011 Mac Mini that I bought partially because of the advertised Wakeup on Wifi feature in Lion.

Does this feature require an Apple router? The marketing material does not state that but I've seen previous non-Lion references to Airport Extreme or Time Capsule being required.

Apple routers are insufficient for my needs because they are missing common QoS (quality of service) capabilities needed for todays commonplace VOIP services.

Apple's Lion marketing page says this:

Low-power wake
In OS X Lion, your Mac can wake up for services such as file sharing, backup, and more without the need to turn on the monitor or attached USB devices.​

No mention of Airport Extreme.

The system preference is titled, "Wake for Wi-Fi network access".

Does this feature work for anyone and if so are you using an Apple router?

It works for me, and yes I am using an Airport Extreme Base Station.

Anyone using wakeup on wifi without an airport extreme?

I have an AEX and if I leave my mac mini sleeping overnight it will not be woken by a wifi packet in the morning. However if it hasn't been sleeping for long then it can be woken

It appears that wake on network access is designed to only work with the Airport extreme base station according to this: http://www.macworld.com/article/142468/2009/08/wake_on_demand.html.

Give Apple a call and verify this and maybe they can help you figure this out.
