Maybe this is a noobish question, but what does the small circle button the the left side of a macbook pro do?

If it is the button that I am thinking of, then it is the battery indicator button, when you push it a certain number of the green LED lights will illuminate for a few seconds displaying how much battery power you have left (8 out of 8 lights means 100%).

It's the 7 year bad luck button. If pressed the leds on the side tell you how many years of bad luck you will have... you didn't press it... did you?

Your MBP from '08 has the same button on the bottom, it's on the battery door.

Also, experimenting and actually pressing the button (gasp!), it isn't a self destruct button...[/-] (oh gawd, how do you do strikethrough's on this forum?)
