New live streaming app Live.ly has shot to the top of the App Store, beating regular jostlers Facebook Messenger, Snapchat, and Instagram to the coveted #1 ranking in the Top Free iPhone Apps chart (via TechCrunch).

Live.ly lets users broadcast video of what they are doing in real time, and has received over half a million downloads since its full rollout last Thursday.

The app's popularity follows the success of musical.ly, an app by the Shanghai company of the same name which lets users create music videos. Musical.ly has seen 100 million downloads by mostly U.S. teenagers since it launched last year.

"We want to thank the musical.ly community for embracing live.ly as an exciting new platform and canvas for creativity and self-expression," Alex Zhu, co-CEO of musical.ly, told TechCrunch. "The fact that this comes almost one year after musical.ly hit #1 on the same chart makes the news even more exciting."

Competition for the mobile live streaming space has been hotting up in recent months, with Facebook Live and Twitter's Periscope gaining increasing popularity. The services have been used to document a variety of sporting and political events, such as NBA Final press conferences and the recent sit-in at the House of Representatives.

Last week, Google also threw its hat into the ring, announcing it was rolling out support for the feature through its YouTube mobile app.

Live.ly is a free download for iPhone and iPad available on the App Store. [Direct Link]

Most apps and services have time limits and of course there's user bandwidth concerns. But I wonder how far we are from true unlimited live streaming on mobile.

The world will become even smaller when every person with a smartphone can broadcast 24/7/365. Although I'm not sure this is a good thing.

More steps towards The Truman Show.

Also - this app has a disadvantage that others do. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube - these are all services that extend beyond the livestream and are publishing platforms. I give credit to snapchat for being one of the only true mobile platforms that can't be accessed via the web.

Sadly this will be the future of television. Reality tv will progress to auditions live from your couch. Only imbeciles want this crap. Narcisstic imbeciles.

I strongly disagree with you on that one. Look at periscope I said the same thing when it came out, and whenever I go on it now it's just a bunch of idiots talking about doing dope and live streaming church. It's pretty safe to say TV and news is pretty safe when the world is full of idiots.

I'm pretty sure tv and news has a big hand to play in keeping people stupid already. Put it on the tv, include a suggestion of male/female bonding and a cliff hanger with caption 'next week, you won't believe what happens!!!!' 'People' love that crap and they will love seeing someone singing 'hit me baby one more time' from their toilet seat.

Clearly, the app is not for everyone, hence the comments.

Clearly, the apps is exactly what a lot of people want, hence it being #1 in the App Store.

I have no interest in the app personally, but also don't see the need to put it down, and its users, with pompous comments.

Let me introduce you to the internet. A place where we must automatically hate everything with a passion.

Me: "Hey Internet! Come over here and meet Batman"

Me: "Batman, say hi to the internet. Internet say hi to Batman"

Internet: "WTH! You're not Christian Bale"

You: "I'm Batman89, not Batman Trilogy Batman."

{Internet kicks Batman89 in the grapes}

See, the internet hates.

I agree with you btw. It's not for everyone, but no need to hate on it.

Oh, and reality TV is better? It's usually some girls pretending to have drama with their friends or people bidding in junkyard sales. At least this stuff is actually real, though it's probably really boring anyway. Besides the junk, I'm sure there will be some quality content on these live streaming apps.

They're probably super bored and dumb for other reasons that can't easily be changed. They won't be particularly useful with or without watching TV. Just hope they at least function enough to have jobs and make money so they aren't doing any harm.

Calm down mate.

You're the one putting "people" in sarcastic quotes. I'm just saying dumb people will be dumb.
Yes and I was saying they are helped along with misinformation from media. If there was only quality informative and non biased content in the media, would people be as stupid? Impossible.

I cannot even fathom why anyone would want to do this, either as a streamer or a watcher. Totally baffles me.

There are some legitimate uses for live streaming video. I'll give you one. My father passed away a few years ago and much of the family were out of state. There was a terrible ice storm at the time of the funeral service so many family members could not attend due to treacherous road conditions. I had good LTE signal on my 5s and I live streamed the service via UStream and many family members were very appreciative that I was able to do so. But I have also recently clicked on some of the Facebook Live feeds in my area and it is mostly idiots doing boring things or talking about nothing of interest.

Guess I'm the only one that noticed.

I'm a father of two 11 year old boys, and a 13 year old daughter. I find this live.ly app cool as ever! My concerns are that some of the comments could affect kids. With bullying posts and such, parents need to make sure their kids are aware of these types of posts, and how to deal with them as they arise. Overall, it's a great app.

[doublepost=1476361845][/doublepost]I think most are missing the point of this app. It's not meant to replace TV, it's purely a social app. My daughters want to go on and check out what their friends that they haven't seen in a while are doing and show them what they are up to. You're not watching a TV show, you're checking out what real friends are up to. Social is everything to teens and teens and this allows them to socialize right from their living room or backyard. And that is cool iMO.

Oh look, celebrities want to make livestreams to communicate with their fans! They must be narcisstic imbeciles.

No, if you're worrying about the future of television, let's talk about stuff like Geordie Shore.
