Hi MacRumors community!

I'm excited to share Local Know, a new macOS app I've been working on that brings intelligent semantic search to your local documents. If you've ever struggled to find specific information across multiple files, this might be exactly what you need.

What is Local Know?

Local Know is a native macOS application that combines vector embeddings with AI-powered question answering to help you search through your local documents intelligently. Unlike traditional search tools that only match keywords, Local Know understands the meaning and context of your content.

Key Features

🧠 Intelligent Semantic Search

  • Vector-based search: Uses advanced embeddings to understand content meaning, not just keywords
  • Context-aware results: Finds relevant information even when you don't use the exact words
  • Document chunking: Automatically breaks down large documents for precise search results

🤖 AI-Powered Q&A

  • Chat with your documents: Ask questions about your document content and get intelligent answers
  • Google Gemini integration: Uses state-of-the-art AI for accurate responses
  • Context preservation: Maintains conversation history for follow-up questions

📄 Extensive File Support

Local Know handles a wide variety of file types:

  • Documents: PDF, DOC, DOCX, RTF, TXT, Markdown
  • Spreadsheets: XLSX, XLS, CSV
  • Presentations: PPT, PPTX
  • Code Files: Swift, Python, JavaScript, Java, C++, and more
  • Web Files: HTML, CSS, XML, JSON
  • Configuration Files: YAML, TOML, INI, PLIST
  • Images: JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, TIFF, BMP

🔒 Privacy-First Design

  • 100% Local Processing: Your documents never leave your Mac
  • No Cloud Dependencies: Works offline after initial setup
  • App Sandbox: Protected by macOS security features
  • User-Controlled AI: Optional API key for features

🌏 Multilingual Interface

  • Bilingual Support: Full interface in both English and Chinese
  • Real-time Switching: Change languages without restarting the app
  • Localized Content: All UI elements and messages translated

How It Works

  1. Select Folders: Choose which directories to index
  2. Automatic Processing: Local Know scans and processes your documents
  3. Vector Indexing: Creates semantic embeddings for intelligent search
  4. Search & Chat: Find documents and ask questions about their content

Technical Highlights

  • Native macOS App: Built with SwiftUI for optimal performance
  • SwiftData: Persistent document storage and metadata
  • SimilaritySearchKit: Advanced vector search capabilities
  • MarkdownUI: Beautiful document rendering
  • Incremental Indexing: Add new documents without reprocessing everything

Use Cases

  • Developers: Search through codebases and documentation
  • Researchers: Find information across academic papers and notes
  • Writers: Locate specific passages in manuscripts and research
  • Students: Study materials and lecture notes organization
  • Professionals: Business documents, reports, and presentations

System Requirements

  • macOS 14.6 or later
  • Apple Silicon or Intel Mac
  • Free storage for document indexing

1 why wouldn't you list support for
.pages and .numbers ? this is an apple associated forum.

2 is there a trial version with a few days cancelable without charge ?

3 is the app's price a one-time lifetime charge or only for this release ?

4 listed developer's website's privacy policies are only available in Chinese language (on developers website)
(macos app data collected label is of course in English in the app store, however).

comment: its a very windows like format, isn't it ?

Support for .pages and .numbers is currently in development. A free trial is not available at this time. It is a one-time purchase for a lifetime license.
