So I was walking down the street today, trying to find a mates place and I had google maps open with Locate Me on. I must say it was fairly accurate for a 1st gen. It was pinpointing the block I was on, street and whatnot. I've seen friends GPS on 3G and it's exact, but I never thought approximate could be so approximate.

"Locate Me" On first gens

I have a 3G and my buddies both have 1st-gens and we did some comparisons and their Locate Me feature worked pretty darn good. Heck, if you just need a pretty good general idea where you are, they work great.
