locating old texts

A short time ago I backed up my entire HD to an external HD using time machine so to install a new HD. I purchased an iphone 6 last December so it only contains text messages since then. I need to locate some old texts from prior to December. Where and how can I find them? BTW I didn't restore everything using time machine, I have just restored what I have needed.
 
If, and only if message logging is enabled in OS X's messages app, all older messages are stored in Library/Messages/Archive
